What is Juice Fasting?

Juice fasting is a type of fasting to help you detox and cleanse your body by consuming only fruit and vegetable juices. By juicing, you give your digestive system a break, while at the same time giving your body all the nutrients it needs. By bypassing the need to digest, the nutrients enter your bloodstream, quickly giving you lots of energy naturally. There are different reasons to do a juice fast. Most people do it for health reasons, especially to detox and cleanse their body and lose weight. FAQ about the Juice Fast Retreat

How much weight can I lose on a juice fast?

It depends. Every body is different so there is no promise you will lose a lot or a little weight. Losing weight is normal during any water or juice fast. The longer the juice fast, the more weight you can lose. However, once you break your juice fast and return to eating you will gain some weight back. How much weight gained will depend on how active you are and the diet you return to. If you are looking for a more permanent solution for losing weight then you will need to consider changing your diet and be more active in your life. For example, we teach the Purnam System to help you lose weight through special intensive breathing techniques combined with yoga postures as well as promote the vegetarian diet, which will automatically help you remove all those negative and hurtful toxins. You can do the Purnam Yoga Retreat while juicing and you will feel a big difference as compared to a regular juice fasting experience.

What should I expect at the beginning of a juice fast?

It is normal for you to feel lethargic, sleepy and have headaches. However, it may be the opposite. You can also feel a lot of energy and enjoy being active. It depends on your body. The hardest part is usually the first three days, because this is the main detox process. Every fast is different, so even if you are experienced, the first three days, as well as the rest of your fast can be completely different from your prior juice fasting experiences.

Will I be okay when I break my juice fast?

Everyone has broken their fast safely while under our guidance, and some even continued their juice fasting when they returned home.

Why should I juice fast at a retreat center and not in my own home?

People have travelled all over the world to come to our spiritual retreat center to do a juice fast because of the spiritual environment, peace and to eliminate distraction. While at home it is easy to be tempted to eat food and fall into your eating habits, especially if you have to cook and feed your family, and the mind will try to make excuses and convince you to go back to eating.

How long should I juice fast for?

It is up to you what your personal juice fasting goal is. Some come for 2 days, while others have surpassed 40 days. We will support you through your entire fast and encourage you during the times you feel you want to quit.

Do you offer water fasting?

Can I switch from a Water Fast into a Juice Fast?

No, we do not recommend this method of transition as it can hurt your body. It is okay to go from juice to water, but not from water to juice.

What can I do while on my Juice Fasting Retreat?

If you would like to learn classes during your juice fast experience, you can sign up and register for any workshop. The breathing techniques from the Purnam System will help you release even more toxins. We encourage you to walk daily, sit out in the sun to absorb the energy, participate in mantra class (twice daily), read and write. Sometimes we hold yoga classes for everyone, so we will invite you to join. You are welcome to bring your tablet and laptop if it helps you, though we do not provide any wifi access. We also do not have tv’s, since we are an ashram.

What kind of juice do you provide?

We provide freshly-made juice with fruit and vegetables from our own garden, local farmer’s markets and grocery stores. We provide organic fruits and vegetables as often as possible. We makes juices from the following vegetables/fruits when available and/or in season.

Fruits: apples, strawberries, pineapples, peaches, grapes, berries, lemon, cantaloupe, honeydew, cucumber
Greens/Vegetables: kale, spinach, bok choy, chard, cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, celery, green/yellow squash, beets

We can also add wheatgrass powder to your fresh juice.

How much juice do you provide?

It depends on how much your body needs. Juices, when juice fasting, are considered a meal and not a beverage. We provide two 16 oz juices during the day and guests feel good with this amount. If you drink a quart of fresh juice per day, you will surpass the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables. We suggest to drink water during the juice fast, and not only juice, to get the full detox and cleanse benefits.

What are the medical restrictions of the juice fast?

Please inform and consult with your physician before starting any juice or water fast. If you have a life threatening or contagious disease, are on heavy medications, pregnant or nursing, or have had a kidney or liver transplant, have weak kidneys or only one kidney, we cannot offer you the juice fasting experience.

Will I get a mantra to help me awaken and grow spiritually?

Part of this retreat includes 12 mantras, which helps you grow spiritually, activate your chakras, increase peace and calmness, and help reduce the negative affects of the mind.

Can I practice silence when I attend this retreat?

Yes, you can have a silent retreat too. You can ask your questions by writing them on a piece of paper if you wish to communicate with anyone during your stay.

I’d like to take a workshop during my stay, is this possible?

Yes, you can participate in one or multiple workshops at the beginning of your retreat. It will be at the beginning of your fast that you will have enough energy to participate. Is it possible to schedule a private consultation during my retreat?

Yes, we do offer private consultations in 30 minute and 1 hour sessions on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can request your private consultation at the time of registration or during your program. To learn more about the private consultation, click here.

I’ve never done anything like this before. So I’m nervous.

It’s completely normal to be nervous, because you might be unfamiliar with spirituality, going to an ashram or retreat center, or learning directly from monks and nuns. Many of our guests have said they wanted to come to the retreat because “it felt right” for so long but were just nervous and even afraid to come.
