WATER FASTING
What should i expect during the fasting experience?
We are experienced monks who fast on a regular basis. The water fasting experience offered at Siddhayatan is more spiritually focused. We are not medical professionals and will not provide medical services such as blood work and medical oversight. If a clinic type of setting is important for your fasting experience, please consider another center.
During your retreat, we will check in with you during mantra and meditation sessions to see how you’re feeling. If needed, we may check your pulse and blood pressure. We are knowledgeable about fasting symptoms and will guide you in recognizing when it may be necessary to break the fast. We also encourage you to listen to your body and communicate any concerns with us.
If we observe signs that fasting may no longer be safe for you, we will strongly encourage you to break the fast for your well-being.

Who cannot fast at siddhayatan?
The Water Fasting Retreat is not suitable for individuals with medical conditions or those who require ongoing medical care or supervision. This retreat is a spiritual program supervised by monks, not a medical clinic. Those who fall into the following categories should not attend:
- Individuals with Medical Conditions: Including but not limited to heart conditions, diabetes, severe anemia, or any other chronic illness that requires medical attention.
- Taking Medications: Those dependent on daily medication should not fast unless they have received approval from their doctor.
- Nutritional Deficiencies: Those who are malnourished, underweight, or suffering from severe vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
- Weight Loss Seekers: This retreat is not for individuals looking to fast solely for weight loss purposes.
- Pregnant or Nursing Women: Fasting during these periods is not advised.
- Mental Health Conditions: Individuals with severe mental health issues that may be exacerbated by fasting.
- Post-Surgical Recovery: Those recovering from recent surgeries or medical procedures.
- Substance Detoxification: Individuals attempting to detox from heavy drug or alcohol use.
- Post-Surgical Recovery: Those recovering from recent surgeries or medical procedures.
- Lack of Spiritual Intention: Fasting at Siddhayatan is a spiritual practice. Those who do not have the desire to grow spiritually should consider other fasting options.
Participants must be in good health, both physically and mentally, and must not rely on medications or treatments that fasting could potentially interfere with. A commitment to the spiritual and cleansing goals of fasting is essential. If you have concerns about your eligibility, we recommend consulting with a medical professional before considering this retreat.
How long should i fast for?
Every body is different. If you’re experienced, you might consider an extended fast beyond 5-7 days. If this is your first time, we encourage you to see how your first 24 – 36 hours go.
Be kind to yourself with your water fasting goals. The water fasting experience may be more difficult than another’s experience. It’s best not to have expectations or compare and take one day at a time.
Most guests opt to fast for 1-7 days for a first-time fast. For extended fasting, guests fast between 7-14 days, and some for up to 30 days.
Do you offer additional support while fasting?
You can always ask us general questions regarding your symptoms and we’ll guide you through them.
If you wish to spend more in-depth time discussing personal, spiritual, and water fasting questions or to receive guidance on any emotions or strong thoughts that may arise as a result of your fast you may sign up for a private 30-min water fasting consultation.
How will you help me break my fast?
We follow an ancient system for breaking fast with a special clove tea, almond milk ghee drink, followed by plant-based broth and other light foods. Especially for fasts more than 4 days, it is very critical to break the fast properly. We do not break fasts with fruits or raw vegetables or bone broth. You must follow our breaking fast method as it has proven to be safe and properly jumpstarts your system. If you wish to break your own way, you must break your fast at home or outside of the center.
Is there a medical facility near the center?
Yes, if you need medical attention, the TMC Bonham Hospital is only 10 miles away.
